A General Duty Assistant (GDA) provides essential non-clinical and basic patient-care support to nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals. The role focuses on patient comfort, safety, hygiene, mobility assistance, and smooth hospital operations.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Assist patients with bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, mobility, and personal hygiene.
- Support patients during shifting, lifting, and transfers between beds, wheelchairs, and stretchers.
- Assist patients with toileting and other basic care requirements.
- Observe and promptly report changes in patient condition to the nursing team.
Support to Medical Staff
- Assist nursing staff with basic activities such as vital-sign monitoring, as instructed.
- Prepare and maintain patient rooms, beds, and patient belongings.
- Transport laboratory samples, medicines, documents, and other items between departments.
- Assist healthcare staff with routine non-clinical activities.
Infection Control & Hygiene
- Maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic environment for patients.
- Follow hand hygiene, PPE, sanitization, and infection-control protocols.
- Dispose of biomedical and other hospital waste as per established guidelines.
Administrative & General Support
- Maintain basic records of patient movement and assigned activities.
- Escort patients and visitors when required.
- Deliver messages and support other non-clinical hospital activities as assigned.
Skills & Competencies
- Compassionate, patient, and respectful approach toward patients.
- Basic understanding of patient hygiene and hospital-care practices.
- Ability to follow instructions and hospital protocols accurately.
- Good physical stamina and ability to assist with patient mobility.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology is an advantage.
Working Conditions
